A single sting usually causes only local pain and swelling — scrape the stinger out (don't pinch it) and apply something cold. Wild colonies in Mexico are largely Africanized and defend their hive in numbers, so give hives a wide berth and seek medical care after multiple stings or any signs of allergy.
